Nutopia 2015
Portraits of travelers in tourist places in Uruguay. They are images captured by people from all over the world visiting Colonia, Rocha, Maldonado and Montevideo.
Like the conceptual country of John Lennon and Yoko Ono: “Nutopia has no land, no borders, no passports, only people. "
It was an attempt to photograph well-known places, keeping only the images of the visitors and rescuing images that they themselves took in Uruguay.
They are "collaborative portraits" where the gaze of the photographer is completed with the gaze of the person being photographed. I also find the idea that emerges about the identity of the portrayed very interesting: we have their face, then their photo enables us to look through those eyes. Each one is "defined" from their own selected view of a foreign territory. From the appropriation of a strange environment.
Portraying people from different places and putting them together in a photographic series seems to transcend borders. The space in the image becomes diegetic and the photographer does not have to travel in search of portraits of the world.
The project also questions what is photographed and who is the author of said image.
