Los Confines (in progress)

With the curiosity to understand the historical process of formation of a country and its identity through the territory that makes it up, that made it up, an investigation arises on the territory that was once the Banda Oriental up to the Ibicuy River.

Los Confines is a photographic project about the exploration of a territory and those who inhabit it. Somehow he wonders if the borders contain a nationality or culture that does not overflow.

With the study of the historical events in relation to the movements of the dry border, I seek to answer the question if there is an expanded Uruguay in Rio Grande do Sul, if they are the same.
The history of the country was born with a continuously moving northern border that even in its own independence was not delimited. Until the

Today there are disputed territories both in Artigas with the Brazilian island and in Rivera in the Artigas Pass. Historian Leonardo Borges se

he questions about this identity built many times by the powers in command of the countries.

But the people who live in these places could be the key to understanding the imaginary worlds of Uruguay and Brazil. For example, the Charrúa descendants that exist along the Uruguay River to the north far from what is now the Eastern Republic of Uruguay.

With forays into Uruguayana, Alegrete, Rosario do Sul, Quarai and Barra de Quaraí y Bage, the photographs clear the fantasy about possible encounters with an expanded Uruguay. Showing ajironadas cities in a global village and with modern citizens with mortal needs. Homogenized in comfort and consumption. Religion and the military presence mark a mix between the urban contemporary and the gaucho tradition.

Medium format analog and digital color photography.
